6 march: visibility, water and daily access
The site grounds the project through a relationship between the lives it serves, the activities it accommodates and the spatial possibilities of the landscape. Funerary demand, cultural diversity, regional accessibility and landscape potential along an urban threshold established the initial selection criteria. These criteria bring different scales into the same enquiry. Regional access concerns the reach of a civic facility, while the last part of a journey concerns how people arrive, gather, accompany a body and leave. A river offers a relationship to ash dispersal, while its banks, changing levels and surrounding terrain determine how that relationship might become inhabitable. Selection therefore begins to organise the programme before a building footprint is drawn.
